The Trip Editor

This is where your trip comes to life. The editor combines a live map, a full itinerary, and a set of planning tools into one screen — so you can see exactly what your trip looks like as you build it.

The Layout

Desktop

Three panels, always visible:
  1. Map (left) — Shows your route for the selected day. Markers for each step. Click any pin to jump to that step in the itinerary. The map updates automatically as you scroll through your days.
  2. Itinerary (centre) — Your day-by-day plan. Add steps, reorder them, manage transport, track bookings.
  3. Day navigation (right) — A quick-access list of all your days and the places in each. Click any entry to jump straight to it.

Mobile

Three views switchable from a tab bar at the top: Map, Itinerary, Details. The map goes full screen in landscape, or you can toggle full screen with the expand button.

The Map

The map is interactive — not just decorative. It stays in sync with your itinerary:
  • Scroll to Day 4 in the itinerary → the map re-centers on Day 4’s places.
  • Click a pin on the map → the itinerary scrolls to that step and highlights it.
  • Click a transport step → the routed polyline for that leg lights up on the map.
Discover nearby places with “Show Picks”: Click the Show Picks button on the map to filter nearby points of interest by category:
  • Accommodation, Restaurants, Cafes, Bars
  • Attractions, Entertainment, Parks, Beaches
  • Shopping, Transport, Parking, Services
  • Saved Favourites
Turn categories on/off individually. Drag any pin from the map directly into your itinerary. Elevation profile: When a day includes a walk, hike, bike ride, or drive, an Elevation button appears on the map. Click it to open a full elevation profile chart at the bottom of the map — showing total ascent, descent, steepness colour-coding, and surface types. Hover the chart and a dot tracks your position on the map in real time. See Elevation Profiles. AI Assistant & Chat (bottom of map):
  • Assistant — Opens the AI chat panel to refine the trip with conversation.
  • Chat — Live chat with everyone who has access to this trip.
  • Invite & Share — Add collaborators or share the trip.

Itinerary View Modes

Switch between three views using the buttons at the top of the itinerary:

Less Info

The clean, compact view. Names, types, and a drag handle — nothing extra. This is the best mode for dragging and dropping. Drag steps within a day to reorder, across days to move them, or drag map pins into the timeline to add them.

Calendar

A clock-based timeline of your day. Every step is positioned by its start time and sized by its duration. Flight cards show full departure-to-arrival blocks. Transport legs show travel time between stops. Use Calendar view to:
  • Check your day doesn’t have back-to-back activities with no travel time between them.
  • Make sure you’re not trying to be at the airport at 7am after a 10pm dinner.
  • Set start times and durations for each activity.
  • See which steps are confirmed booked vs. still to confirm.

More Info

See each place’s photos, description, ratings, opening hours, and ticket prices alongside your itinerary. Edit notes and descriptions without opening a separate modal.

Adding Content

Add a step

Click the + Add button inside any day. Choose from:
  • Ask Rooutie AI — get personalised suggestions for that specific day
  • Find Hotel — search or paste a Booking.com URL
  • Add Activity — search tours, experiences, and activities
  • Add Transport — route a drive, walk, hike, bike ride, or transit leg between locations
  • Add Note — drop a reminder or tip anywhere in the day
  • Explore Recommendations — browse popular nearby places from other travellers
Or paste any URL directly into the search bar (Google Maps, Booking.com, GetYourGuide, Viator) and the place is imported automatically.

Add a day

Click “Add Day” at the bottom of the itinerary. Or use the Day Menu (three dots on any day header) to add a day above or below the current one.

Drag and Drop

  • Reorder steps within a day — click, hold, drag.
  • Move to another day — drag a step card from one day and drop it onto another.
  • From the map — in Less Info mode, drag any map pin into your timeline. The step is added at the position you drop it.
  • Reorder days — collapse the days and drag them to change the order of your whole trip.

Accommodation Planner

Rooutie tracks where you’re sleeping every night. Add hotels or accommodation as steps in your itinerary, and each day automatically shows:
  • Waking up at — the hotel you stayed the previous night
  • Staying tonight — where you’re checking in for the night
  • Suggested stays — if a night has no accommodation set, Rooutie surfaces hotels near your activities for that day
  • Issues alert — if there are accommodation gaps or conflicts, you’ll see an alert so you can fix them before you travel
See Accommodation Planner for full details.

The Day Navigation Sidebar

The right-side panel lists all your days and every place in them. Click any place to scroll directly to it. Click any day heading to jump to that day. On long trips, this is the fastest way to move around.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of the Editor

  • Start in Less Info mode to build the structure of your days quickly using drag and drop from the map.
  • Switch to Calendar once you have your steps placed to check your timing actually works.
  • Switch to More Info when you’re finalising and want to add notes, check opening hours, and confirm every detail.
  • Use the AI on individual days — not just at trip creation. The day-level AI can regenerate or enhance a single day without touching the rest of your plan.
